Professional Development Learning Series: Secondary Transition 101

Photo taken from behind.The District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education and SchoolTalk are pleased to offer Secondary Transition 101, a professional learning series with four sessions, each focused on a different aspect of the secondary transition process. Sessions are designed to build special educators’ capacity to develop and implement high-quality Individualized Transition Plans (ITPs) for transition-age youth. Participants will earn 1.5 PLUs for each module they complete. This online professional development series will be offered three times this fall. Please register for one of the three dates offered for each session below.

Session 1 – Legal & Theoretical Background of Secondary Transition

Participants will 1) Familiarize themselves with postsecondary outcomes of students with disabilities in D.C. and across the U.S. and 2) Understand the federal and local laws, theory, and research that support the IDEA’s secondary transition mandate.

Session 2 – Parts of the Transition Plan (Part 1)

Participants will 1) Define student and family involvement in the development and implementation of the Transition Plan, 2) Define the three transition domains, and 3) Identify (distance learning and in-person) age-appropriate transition assessments to guide all transition programming.

Session 3 – Parts of the Transition Plan (Part 2)

Participants will 1) Draft individualized postsecondary & annual transition goals based on age-appropriate transition assessments and 2) Identify (distance learning and in-person) transition services and course of study to help students meet transition goals.

Session 4 – The Final IEP

Participants will 1) Identify procedural requirements as students reach age of majority and prepare to exit high school, 2) Understand how to connect youth and families to adult service agencies, and 3) Review the purpose of the summary of performance.
