Why is SchoolTalk So Important?

More than one out of every six students in DC Public Schools has been identified as eligible for Special Education services. Every one of these students requires an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that will address his or her specific needs. Schools and parents or guardians must agree about what the problems are and what to do about them. There is a lot of room for disagreement when a child's education is at stake. SchoolTalk is here to help make sure these disagreements can be resolved before they escalate into expensive and unnecessary courtroom battles.

What is SchoolTalk?

SchoolTalk is a DC-based non-profit organization that brings special education dispute prevention and early dispute resolution programs to DC schools. We work with school personnel and the parents or guardians of special education students to help ensure that everyone works collaboratively toward the goal of securing Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) for students with disabilities.

Tax-deductible donations to support SchoolTalk can be made on-line.

It is exciting to see a nationwide shift away from the formal and often legalistic confrontation that is inherent in due process proceedings, to an emphasis on early resolution of special education conflicts, strengthened problem-solving skills, and the desire to build trust between school personnel and families.
